Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the effect of development of the alternative Export Processing Zone (EPZ) sites with particular reference to game and habitat conservation vis-à-vis the adjacent Nairobi National Park and then Kitengela Game Conservation Area. Baseline Studies, Impact Identification and Assessment, Mitigation Measures all follow guidelines of the World Bank.

Project Backround

Athi River is located 30kms South East of Nairobi and is designated as a major Industrial Growth Centre. The 96Ha first phase of the EPZ site at Athi River was selected from a choice of six main site locations within Mavoko Municipal Council. Environmental Impact considerations as well as Engineering Aspects for these sites were examined and compared. Mitigating measures in the EIA study included conceptualization of urban growth models, land use planning and provision of low cost housing. These influenced the Engineering design of the EPZ development at the selected site. The on-site and off-site phase I infrastructure development project included the following key components:

• Onsite infrastructure for 97ha high quality industrial land
• Sewage Stabilization Ponds: 600,000m3 earthworks to treat 15,000m3/day of sewage.
• Treated Water Main and Rising/Falling Main: 32km, 250 to 600 mm dia.
• Reinforced Concrete Reservoirs: capacity 8500m3 and 2000m3

These EPZ infrastructure works were designed to provide services to the residents in the adjacent Athi River and Kitengela areas as well.
